How to play Open Season
You are at the wheel of a buggy with a gun bolted to the roll cage, in an open world that is generated fresh every run: rolling fields, pine forests, sand dunes and rocky snow-capped mountains. The buggy cruises by itself, so steering and shooting are what matter. Everything that moves is a target: cars crossing your path, people out walking, deer in the woods, camels on the dunes, goats on the slopes, cows and sheep in the fields. Every hit scores points and puts seconds back on a clock that starts at sixty. The first minute is forgiving, then the targets get faster, start fleeing earlier, cars swerve when you draw a bead on them, and each hit buys you less time.
Controls
- Touch: left thumb drives (push up for speed, down to brake), tap or hold anywhere else to shoot where you touch
- Mouse: move to aim, click or hold to fire; WASD or the arrow keys steer and change speed
- Space also fires on a keyboard
- Driving straight into a target counts as a hit too
- Tap the speaker icon to mute
Tips
- The clock is the real enemy. Chain hits within two and a half seconds to build a combo multiplier worth up to ×3.
- Far shots pay a distance bonus and cars pay the most, plus extra time, so lead a crossing car rather than waiting for it to stop.
- Animals move in herds and panic together. One hit on a herd sends the rest running, so shoot the far one first.
- Use the edge arrows: when nothing is in view they point at the nearest targets.
- Later in a run people zigzag and cars jink when aimed at. Aim where they will be, not where they are.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Open Season free to play?
- Yes. It runs in your browser with no download, no install and no sign-up.
- Is the world the same every time?
- No. The terrain, biomes, trees and rocks are generated from a new random seed each time the page loads, so no two runs share a map.
- How does the timer work?
- You start with 60 seconds. Every hit adds time, around four seconds early on and under two seconds once the run gets hard, up to a cap of 99 seconds. When it reaches zero the run ends.
- Does it run on a phone?
- Yes. It uses WebGL with reduced detail on phones. A recent phone will run it smoothly; very old devices may struggle.
