How to play Tempest
You are alone in a field in a thunderstorm at night. Sparking rings appear on the ground marking exactly where lightning is about to hit, and you have from the moment a ring charges until the bolt drops to be somewhere else. Your score is simply time survived, at ten points a second, plus a near-miss bonus for clearing a strike by a narrow margin. As the storm builds, the telegraph gets shorter and the strikes come closer together, so the field fills up faster than you can walk out of trouble.
Controls
- Drag anywhere to move — the game follows your finger
- Keyboard: WASD or the arrow keys, Space to start
- Tap the speaker icon to mute
Tips
- Move to open ground, not just out of the current ring. A new ring can land where you are heading.
- Clearing a strike narrowly pays a near-miss bonus, so cutting it fine is worth real points — up to a point.
- The telegraph shrinks from about a second and a half down to under a second, so build the habit of moving early.
- Keep to the middle of the field. Getting pinned against an edge removes half your escape routes.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Tempest free to play?
- Yes. It runs in your browser with no download or account.
- How does scoring work?
- You score 10 points for every second you survive, plus a bonus each time you clear a lightning strike by a narrow margin.
- How much warning do I get before a strike?
- A sparking ring charges for about 1.5 seconds early on, dropping to roughly 0.7 seconds once the storm is at full strength.
